Manchester City have seen Jack Grealish make significant strides towards a recovery from injury in the last few days, according to England interim manager Lee Carsley.
The 29-year-old was ruled out of Manchester City action in light of the club’s 1-2 win away to Wolves last month, having sustained a problem that was originally set to rule him out of action for between seven and 10 days, according to Pep Guardiola.
An absence in the following games would also be marred by a cryptic Instagram upload to Jack Grealish’s account, in which the England international shared a quote which read, “You never know what people are going through and sometimes the people with the biggest smiles are struggling the most, so be kind.”
In the lead up to Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat away to Bournemouth in the Premier League, Guardiola would go on to reveal that there was a likelihood that Grealish would not feature again for the club until after the international break.
However, confusion ensued amongst the online Manchester City supporter base when the former Aston Villa midfielder was selected for international action with England for their forthcoming UEFA Nations League contests.
But whilst speaking to the media on Thursday afternoon after announcing his final England squad for the November international break, interim head coach Lee Carsley revealed the latest developments concerning Grealish’s return from injury.
“Jack’s been training at City for the last couple of days. So we’re hoping that we’ll assess him when he comes into camp,” Carsley revealed, just days after Pep Guardiola had indicated Grealish would be out of Manchester City action until after the international break.
“Jack is in the same position as maybe four or five other players that there’s question marks over whether they’re going to be involved or not,” Carsley continued. “We try and give them as long as we can.”
The England interim head coach, who will hand over to Thomas Tuchel in 2025, went on to explain, “We’ve got almost a standby list ready, that if we were to lose two or three players, that we’re capable of replacing them.
“And I think as well, I don’t think this is the time of year to be gambling, or taking chances with players. If there’s a risk that they’re not fit, we won’t take that chance.
“We definitely wouldn’t put a player at risk. We take the lead off the clubs. Really happy with the communication that we’ve had from them. We’ll assess it again on Sunday.”
Pep Guardiola is due to face the media on Friday afternoon when he looks forward to Manchester City’s return to Premier League action with an away trip to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday evening.
City will be wanting to bring an end to a run of three matches without a win or a draw, having sustained defeats in the Carabao Cup fourth round against Tottenham, away to Bournemouth, and most recently, at the hands of Sporting CP via a 4-1 scoreline in Lisbon.
