Nicolas Jackson's gesture to returning teammate Mykhailo Mudryk has highlighted how much support the Ukraine international has within the squad.

Mudryk made his first appearance, albeit unofficial, for Chelsea in more than a year and a half following a suspension from football after failing a drug test, which revealed a low concentration of meldonium, a prohibited substance.

After being charged, he was handed a four-year ban from football, but decided to appeal his case. It has recently been resolved, and Mudryk is now able to play once again, which saw him link up with the Chelsea squad for the Asia part of their pre-season tour.

When he last played for Chelsea in November 2024, Chelsea were managed by Enzo Maresca. Xabi Alonso is now in charge and offered his full support to the 25-year-old.

Alonso confirmed Mudryk, who has been privately training in preparation for a return, would play against Juventus in Hong Kong on Wednesday, and the Spaniard fulfilled his promise by bringing him on in the closing stages of the match at the Kai Tak Stadium.

Mudryk came on for Jackson, who was only brought on at half-time. It was a decision which raised eyebrows as to whether it was pre-planned since the Senegal international showed no signs of injury.

And after all, there was more to it than met the eye as to why it was Jackson who came off for Mudryk.

Jackson agreed with Alonso before the friendly, which saw Chelsea lose 1-0 to the Serie A side, making it back-to-back defeats, that he would be the player who would sacrifice himself to come off so that Mudryk could come on before the end.

When Mudryk came on, his teammates on the bench applauded him in support of an emotional moment as he completed his comeback.

It showed Chelsea's togetherness, from his teammates at the time of his suspension to those who have joined the club in recent years, and even this summer.

"I’m really pleased for him," Alonso said post-match. "It was emotional for everyone from the club to see him back.

"When I told him before the game he could play 10 or 15 minutes, he was thrilled for sure. It was after such a long period (that he couldn’t play with the team), so it was a great feeling for him and for everyone else.

"It was more than a football decision. It was a human decision and (an) emotional decision to give him this boost, to feel the great support that he got and the great reception when he came on the pitch."

Jackson's future is uncertain, too. He still has something to prove to Alonso, who has several decisions to make over who he wants in attack, with Joao Pedro certain to lead the line and Danny Welbeck signed from Brighton and Hove Albion this summer.

It offers Alonso a glimpse into the core of the group at Chelsea. A strong sign of togetherness that he can build on as he settles into life at Stamford Bridge.

Whether Mudryk stays or leaves on loan in 2026-27 remains unclear, but his return to action has given Chelsea a boost. Hopefully that will translate into results as they look to improve on their disappointing 10th-placed Premier League finish last season.
