The Tyne-Wear derby at St James's Park delivered its usual intensity, and Sunderland Echo set out post-match player ratings for Régis Le Bris’s side.
Newcastle opened the scoring, then Sunderland equalised after the interval as the visitors grew into the contest.
Goalkeeper Melker Ellborg was shaky early on, delayed a goal kick that Anthony Gordon closed down and his distribution faltered under pressure before improving after the break. Rated six.
Trai Hume filled in at left-back, dropped into midfield at times and showed composure. He hooked the ball back for Sunderland’s second-half equaliser. Rated seven.
Lutsharel Geertruida started at right-back and struggled before the interval as Sunderland fought for rhythm, then pushed on and posed a threat going forward. Rated seven.
Omar Alderete defended well and could do little about the opener. Excellent on the ball, he broke the lines several times with passes into midfield and looked assured throughout. Sunderland’s standout performer, rated nine.
