Sunderland faced one of their biggest tests of the season at St James’ Park, a Tyne-Wear derby that delivered intensity, noise and pressure.
According to Sunderland Echo, these are the player ratings from the St James’ Park clash.
Melker Ellborg looked uncertain early in goal, delayed a goal kick that Anthony Gordon closed down and his first-half distribution was shaky. He settled after the interval. Rating six.
Trai Hume filled in at left-back, stepping into midfield at times, and showed composure on the ball. He hooked the ball back for Sunderland’s second-half equaliser. Rating seven.
Lutsharel Geertruida started at right-back and struggled before half-time as Sunderland failed to find rhythm, then offered far more going forward after the break. Rating seven.
Omar Alderete defended well in the first half and could do nothing about Newcastle’s opener. Excellent in possession, he broke lines with sharp passes and looked assured throughout. Sunderland’s standout performer. Rating nine.
