Tottenham midfielder James Maddison will miss the majority of the upcoming season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 28-year-old has had a torrid time with injuries over the last two seasons, missing 24 games including last year’s Europa League final.

And Maddison is now set to undergo surgery after rupturing his ACL in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle last week.

He has injured the same knee that ruled him out of the Europa League final against Manchester United.

This news will come as a huge blow to boss Thomas Frank, who will also be without Heung-min Son following confirmation of the forward’s departure for LAFC.

Maddison’s injury adds to Spurs’ need for a number 10, having been unsuccessful in their attempt to sign Morgan Gibbs-White earlier this summer.

Spurs start their league campaign against Burnley next Saturday and face Bayern Munich next up in a friendly.
