Manchester City midfielder James McAtee is set to depart the club this summer, according to The Daily Mail.

McAtee returned to Manchester City last summer following a successful loan spell at Sheffield United.

During the 2024/25 season, he made 27 appearances across all competitions for City, scoring seven goals, including a memorable FA Cup hat-trick against Salford City.

Nonetheless, his role remained largely peripheral, with limited Premier League starts and sporadic playing time.

With Manchester City looking to refresh their squad following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne and the arrival of new midfield reinforcements, McAtee’s pathway to regular first-team football appears to remain limited.

The midfielder is attracting significant attention from several Bundesliga teams who are eager to secure his services as he enters the final year of his contract.

A transfer away from Man City would represent an opportunity for the 22-year-old to establish himself as a key player elsewhere.

RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt and Stuttgart have joined the race to bring McAtee to Germany, joining long-term admirers Bayer Leverkusen.

The aforementioned clubs view McAtee as a dynamic midfielder capable of adding creativity and versatility to their squads.

Known for its consistent development of young talent, the Bundesliga is likely to be an attractive destination for McAtee.

McAtee was not included in City’s Club World Cup squad, but he starred for the England Under-21s en route to a second straight European Championship title courtesy of Saturday’s 3-2 triumph over Germany in the final.

His impending departure is not for a lack of trust by his current employers, as any deal to take him away from the Etihad Stadium is expected to include a buyback clause.
