James McClean’s return to Derry City has been anything but quiet, with a house fire and a spiky first outing following his Wrexham exit, despite his wife Erin hoping for a calmer life back home.
On Friday a blaze broke out at the family’s new Derry home, thought to have been sparked by the boiler, and it was quickly brought under control by emergency services. Wales Online reports that the 36-year-old moved back last month with Erin and their four children.
Erin described the scare online, saying they were lucky it was not worse and praising the fire brigade’s quick response. She has also outlined the upheaval of moving, including their children saying goodbye to football friends, and a sense of relief at returning.
McClean started on Saturday as Derry won the Presidents Cup 1-0 against Shamrock Rovers, setting up Darragh Markey’s winner. He celebrated in front of the Rovers support after trading barbs during the game.
Afterwards he used Instagram to criticise sections of the away support, alleging he had been called an orange b*****d by fellow countrymen.
Claims circulated that he refused to speak in the press room. He later said he declined while journalist Paul Rowan was present, citing the 2017 Austria game at the Aviva when, he says, Rowan wrote to UEFA and FIFA seeking bans for him and Martin O’Neill, and he used strong language about the reporter.
Early signs suggest the winger’s Irish swansong could be just as incident filled.
