Liverpool’s defensive depth has again come under scrutiny, with James Pearce of The Athletic providing insight into the future of Ibrahima Konate. The French centre-back, now 26, finds himself in the final year of his deal at Anfield, and the uncertainty surrounding his situation could shape the club’s season.
Pearce described Konate as “more important to Liverpool than ever but his future remains unclear.” Unless progress is made, he will be able to speak to overseas clubs in January.
After a spell of inconsistency, Konate has rediscovered his best football. His display in the recent Merseyside derby stood out, where he won 10 of his 13 duels and registered more clearances than anyone else on the pitch. In fact, only Virgil van Dijk has a stronger aerial duel success rate in the Premier League this season.

This partnership has been pivotal in limiting opponents to just three shots on target across Liverpool’s last three league games. Such defensive stability is exactly what Arne Slot demanded after criticism earlier in the campaign.
The timing of Giovanni Leoni’s knee injury has increased the reliance on Konate. Liverpool’s failed move for Marc Guehi in the summer means Joe Gomez is the only senior option alongside Van Dijk and Konate. Experiments with Wataru Endo, Andy Robertson and Ryan Gravenberch at centre-back have only highlighted the lack of depth.
Rhys Williams remains another alternative, but his absence from regular first-team action since 2021 underlines the gamble of relying on him.
Pearce also noted that Konate has emerged as a leader, building bonds with new arrivals like Hugo Ekitike, and also providing a steady and reliable partner for Virgil Van Dijk.
From a fan’s perspective, the situation surrounding Ibrahima Konate is a worrying echo of past missteps. Supporters have not forgotten the frustration of losing Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free, and there is a real sense that Konate’s case cannot be allowed to drift in the same way.
Many Liverpool fans see Konate as the natural successor to Virgil van Dijk, not just in terms of defensive dominance but also leadership. His performance against Everton was exactly what supporters have been hoping for—commanding in duels, calm in possession, and willing to step up when the stakes are highest. That is the version of Konate Liverpool need to build around.
The concern is that contract talks have stalled for too long. Preliminary discussions with Richard Hughes almost a year ago have produced no agreement, leaving fans questioning why such an important player’s future remains unresolved. With Giovanni Leoni sidelined and depth already stretched thin, Konate’s departure would leave the squad exposed and potentially force another late scramble in the transfer market.
From the stands, it feels simple: Konate has earned his deal. He is in his prime, resilient, and already embedded within the squad’s culture. Securing his signature would not only protect the team’s short-term competitiveness but also provide a cornerstone for Slot’s long-term goals. For many supporters, it is less a question of if Konate should stay, and more why the club has taken so long to make it happen.
