FC Barcelona recently lost to Sevilla, and in quite a humiliating way as well. With this loss, the Catalan giants have dropped to second place in La Liga, and they must now recollect themselves before the end of the upcoming international break.

However, in that defeat against Sevilla, a lot of different players were blamed and singled out. One player in particular who was criticised, however, was Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo, and just recently, a former Liverpool defender and Champions League winner joined in on the criticism.

Jamie Carragher, as quoted by SPORT, recently claimed on Sky Sports that FC Barcelona must sell the 26-year-old Uruguayan defender if they want to do well moving forward:

“Every time Barça face an elite opponent, he switches off, and it’s costing them dearly. If Barça want to do well, they must sell him without hesitation.”

Furthermore, he elaborated and provided his own analysis of Araujo, which included what he liked about the player but also critiqued the things that make him a liability:

“I like the attitude with which Araujo approaches games, but there comes a point when passion isn’t enough. Defending at this level is about decision-making, not just tackling. And that’s where Araujo has a weakness that ends up hurting his team in key moments and decisive matches of the season.”

Definitely some harsh words from the former Liverpool player, but not exactly completely unjustifiable. However, Araujo was not the only issue in the game against Sevilla, and Barça would do well to understand that and look for a more holistic solution to their problems this season.
