Jamie Carragher’s exchanges with Mohamed Salah over the past fortnight have been noisy, uncomfortable and impossible to ignore. For Liverpool supporters, they have stirred debate rather than settled it. As one of the club’s most recognisable voices, Carragher was always likely to respond forcefully to Salah’s pointed comments at Elland Road, which he felt crossed a line.

That initial reaction framed the former defender as confrontational, even personal. Yet with Salah now back in the Liverpool squad, Carragher’s tone has softened into something more reflective. On Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, he offered advice directed squarely at Salah and his representatives, and it was advice rooted less in outrage and more in consequence.
Carragher’s position is not driven by hostility. He remains, above all, a fierce advocate for Liverpool and what the club represents. From that standpoint, he believes Salah stands at a crossroads where emotion and judgement must be carefully separated.
Carragher addressed the wider assumption that his criticism stemmed from animosity. Instead, he framed his argument around opportunity and regret. He suggested that a January exit, particularly to Saudi Arabia, could see Salah step away from a potentially defining phase of Liverpool’s season.
“I don’t see Mo Salah playing for Liverpool next season,” he said. “The big thing in my mind is are we going to see Mo Salah from now until the end of the season. We know he’s going to AFCON, that will finish in mid-January. It’s obvious he has an issue with the manager.
“Last week I was giving advice to Mo Salah and his agents, and I’m going to do it again because what we saw at the end of the game was a lap of appreciation, a little bit emotional with the Kop there, he’s probably not sure himself if that’s his last time at Anfield. But if he’s thinking about moving on I would urge him to think again.”
The emphasis was clear. Carragher believes Salah may be underestimating what he would be leaving behind.
Carragher’s argument sharpened when he turned to the likely destination being discussed. “The reason I say this is if Mo Salah were to move on from Liverpool now, the talk is he would go to the Saudi league, which is talked about over there but probably nowhere else except when there’s transfer windows open. He’s not going to leave Liverpool for Barcelona or Real Madrid.

“Now, Liverpool in the second half of the season could get to an FA Cup final, they could get to a Champions League final. Can you imagine Mo Salah in Saudi playing for whatever team he’s playing for, watching Liverpool come out in Budapest for a Champions League final.”
It was a vivid image, designed to cut through contract numbers and personal disagreements. Carragher’s point was simple. Leaving mid season would remove the chance to shape how Salah’s Liverpool story ends.
Viewed without sentiment, Carragher’s logic carries weight. Liverpool have not been flawless this season, but they have shown an ability to rise in Europe, beating high level opponents when momentum briefly aligned. If that cohesion returns more consistently, a deep Champions League run remains plausible.
For Salah, such a scenario would offer the ideal farewell. Lifting another major trophy, or even contesting one, would frame his departure in triumph rather than tension. Walking away in January would erase that possibility entirely.
Carragher is not denying the friction between Salah and Arne Slot. He is questioning whether that friction should dictate the timing of departure. Players of Salah’s stature rarely get to choose perfect endings, but this one still exists, faintly but credibly.
Perhaps that is the core of the advice. Strip away emotion, ignore the noise, and weigh what could still be achieved. Liverpool’s season is not finished, and neither, Carragher suggests, is Salah’s opportunity to leave on his own terms.
