If Jamie Vardy returns to England, returning to Leicester City seems inevitable, but one board member may have to leave for it to happen

The future of Jamie Vardy is currently uncertain, and if the 39-year-old decides to move back to England at the culmination of the season, perhaps he could be playing in League One?

Vardy has played his trade in Italy for the last year, signing for newly-promoted Cremonese after ending a 13-year stint with Leicester City, in which he became a modern-day club legend and their talisman throughout their Premier League-winning and European days.

His one-year contract with Cremonese includes a further year on offer if Marco Giampaolo's side remain in Serie A. As it stands, Vardy's side are in the relegation zone heading into the final day on Sunday, and if they do succumb to immediate relegation, the 39-year-old could be on the move again.

In the time since Vardy departed the King Power Stadium, Leicester's decline has rapidly continued, and they find themselves in League One for only the second time in their history.

Also going down with the Foxes was Sheffield Wednesday, but their outlook on the upcoming League One season is a lot more positive with ambitious new owner David Storch at the helm, and he and the rest of the higher-ups have discussed the possibility of bringing the veteran striker to Hillsborough to play for his boyhood club.

However, Joe Crann added ahead of that report that a move back to Leicester seemed the more likely out of the two third-tier-bound clubs. Either way, the 39-year-old would be a massive coup for a League One side, as he still showed with his seven Serie A goals this season that he can still be an integral frontman in a top-flight outfit.

Sheffield Wednesday may end up missing out on Jamie Vardy signing if one Leicester City chief departs

While Vardy returning to England to play for the club he played in the academy for until his release 24 years ago would be a fairytale end to a storied career, a return to Leicester to help stamp his legacy and get the Foxes back on their feet would be more apt.

However, Leicester's higher-ups haven't been the most popular among those in the stands at the King Power Stadium, and that could have possibly spread towards the Vardy's.

Indeed, back in January, when the legendary striker made a return to Leicester during a bit of free time he had away from Cremonese, he was filmed taking pictures with fans, and, understandably, those fans wanted him to return to the King Power.

In response, Jamie's wife, Rebekah Vardy, supposedly said: "Not while Jon Rudkin is there."

There have always been murmurs that there was animosity between the former Leicester frontman and Rudkin. Vardy omitted the 61-year-old from his farewell speech back in April, amidst rumours that the director of football was unhappy with the 39-year-old's perceived influence at the King Power Stadium.

So, perhaps Vardy wouldn't want to head back to Leicester with certain board members still in charge, but if he were to depart, a return there would likely be more attractive than Sheffield Wednesday, even with the connection he has to the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday may have the upper hand in Jamie Vardy pursuit after the recent Leicester City board restructuring

Rudkin has been at Leicester for 30 years now, holding numerous roles, but his main role during Vardy's tenure at the King Power Stadium was the director of football, which he was for 12 years until this past March.

The Foxes underwent a senior leadership restructure towards the tail end of the season, and after that, it was announced that Rudkin would be appointed to the role of Chief Football Officer.

The club stated that this role will see him "provide executive leadership of all football matters, ensuring long-term sporting alignment, strategic squad development and the high-performance environment required to deliver sustained competitive success."

So, even if Vardy wouldn't want to return to Leicester with Rudkin still a member of the board, it could also be true that the new CFO wouldn't want the club to pursue the 39-year-old if he decides that he doesn't fit into the "strategic squad development" ahead of their League One return, no matter how unpopular that decision may be.

Therefore, perhaps Wednesday could be in with a shot of landing their former academy product, if League One is, indeed, where his next destination is.
