Liverpool’s flying start to the season has added fresh intrigue to the Premier League title race. Five wins from five under Arne Slot have left the champions five points clear of Arsenal and eight clear of Manchester City. With the early tone set, debate naturally turns to who can mount the strongest challenge. Jan Molby, speaking to Trev Downey for Anfield Index, offered candid reflections on Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with City and how the picture is shaping up for Liverpool.
Molby did not hold back in his assessment of the clash at the Emirates.“There has been a lot of criticism of Mikel Arteta and the starting eleven that he picked but I actually think that the biggest surprise was the way that Man City played.”
For a side that has so often defined itself by control and authority, Molby noted how unusual Pep Guardiola’s approach looked.“I understand that they’ve gone to the Emirates and take the lead inside ten minutes, but Pep Guardiola would’ve never played like that in the past.”
His suggestion that Guardiola’s men no longer inspire the same fear will resonate with many who have sensed City’s aura dim slightly.
In Molby’s view, the campaign is shaping into a duel at the top.“I still think that Liverpool and Arsenal will finish first and second. I just can’t have Man City in that conversation.”
He pointed to flashes of quality within City’s squad but remained unconvinced about their overall rhythm.“Donnarumma has come in and looks good, Rodri is slowly getting back to the form and Haaland is Haaland, but apart from that, I just don’t see it.”
Such frankness underlines a wider perception that while City are formidable on paper, their consistency may falter in a season of fine margins.
Much of Liverpool’s momentum has been attributed to Arne Slot’s willingness to take calculated risks. Molby highlighted how the Dutchman’s approach contrasts with Arsenal’s.“Liverpool aren’t going to win every game and injuries will come along, but I think it’s all about how brave each team will be.”
“Slot gambles to win games, when Arteta doesn’t and that could be the difference.”
Those words underline the importance of conviction in a title chase. Slot has impressed by instilling both fluidity and resilience, enabling Liverpool to strike quickly and maintain control when needed.
While cautioning against early conclusions, Molby emphasised how Liverpool’s flawless start has provided a cushion.“It’s too early to say because it’s a long season, but at the moment we don’t have a title contender alongside us that are on fire.”
“We’ve already bought ourselves a defeat. We can lose a game and still be at least two points clear at the top of the table.”
“It’s going well in a funny sort of way for Liverpool.”
His comments encapsulate a sense of optimism balanced with realism. Injuries, form dips and fixture congestion will all play their part, yet Liverpool are well-placed. The champions have already shown a sharpness and hunger that suggests they intend to defend their crown with authority.
