"Our second half was good. Maybe we showed a bit too much respect to Arsenal in the first half and were afraid to play," he told Amazon Prime.

"After that the team improved, but not enough to reach the final. It is a pity and we are disappointed, but that is life. Arsenal played better and they are in the final."

Atlético finished 14th in the league phase, then came through the play-off to reach the last 16. They beat Club Brugge 7-4 on aggregate, eliminated Tottenham 7-5, then ousted Barcelona 3-2 in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal return to the Champions League final for the first time in 20 years, their last appearance coming in 2006 when they lost 2-1 to Barcelona. Diego Simeone’s side last reached the final in 2016.
