Leonardo Jardim arrives at Flamengo under pressure after being chosen by president Bap to replace the sacked Filipe Luís. According to Globo.com, his first task is to halt the crisis and lift a squad shaken by the departure before Sunday’s Carioca final against Fluminense.

The mood at Ninho do Urubu has darkened, with players criticising the manner of Filipe’s dismissal after the 8-0 win over Madureira. Though some disliked his choices, most backed him, and leaders Danilo, Jorginho and Arrascaeta defended the coach.

Relations with director of football José Boto are strained, players cite his distance in daily work during crises. His message the day after the sacking, blaming the squad, was poorly received.

Jardim and Boto share nationality, which could speed up understanding, but the coach must manage egos and reconnect the dressing room. Competition for places and jealousy over contracts, especially for recent arrivals, have fuelled tensions.

The board felt Filipe Luís lacked a firm hand, which shortened his spell. They expect Jardim to be tougher and demand more, with Bap unhappy at poor displays and two titles lost in 2026.

Jardim is known for a strong temperament. At Cruzeiro he benched Dudu and Gabigol, and Dudu later broke with the club and joined rivals Atlético-MG. His deal at Flamengo calls for a harder line after 2025 trophies, and from Wednesday he set about motivating the group with backing from Boto and Bap.
