Four months into his Flamengo tenure, Leonardo Jardim has revealed a softer, father-figure approach, marrying firm standards with individual care. The club’s Portuguese connections remain strong, yet his day-to-day style differs from several compatriots.
Explaining the outlook that shapes his management, Jardim said he has lived on three continents and worked with multiple nationalities, which helps him read situations with more reason than emotion. He added that Brazilians, when shown affection, give their best, and that he found a large, committed group at Flamengo, he told FlamengoTV.
Born in Barcelona, Venezuela, to Portuguese parents, Jardim grew up on Madeira, Cristiano Ronaldo’s home island. He started at Camacha from 2000 to 2008, then moved to Chaves and won the second tier with Beira-Mar in 2009/10, before spells at Braga, Olympiacos, Sporting and a notable stint at Monaco, later working in the Gulf and arriving in Brazil with Cruzeiro in 2025.
Jardim has used the inter-season period to transmit ideas and concepts to academy players, even while acknowledging it serves as a shop window for some. Wallace Yan says conversations are direct, the tasks are clear and he will keep working to earn more minutes.
Johnny describes Jardim as a paizão, noting specific sessions for youngsters aimed at accelerating their development for senior football. Daniel Thuram says these drills clarify Flamengo’s tactical mechanisms so that academy players are not lost when stepping up.
On Saturday he closes this home block seeking a first win over Benfica. In eight meetings he has five defeats and three draws, across two Champions League games, five league matches and one Portuguese Cup tie. Kick-off is 15:30 Brasília time.
