Javier Mascherano has stepped down as Inter Miami head coach for personal reasons. The club said in a statement that he has ended his tenure after guiding the team through a historic spell.

In his first season he delivered two major trophies, the club’s first MLS Cup and the Eastern Conference title. The 2025 campaign brought 101 goals across league and play-offs, a single season MLS record, including a post-season record 20.

On the international stage, Inter Miami reached the knockout rounds of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the first MLS side to do so. The club also became the first Concacaf team to beat European opposition in an official international match and the first team from the United States to win at the tournament.

Regionally, the team made the Concacaf Champions Cup semi-finals and reached a second Leagues Cup final in only its third entry. Mascherano thanked the club, staff, players and fans, said he would cherish the club’s first star, and wished Inter Miami continued success.

Managing owner Jorge Mas praised his dedication, highlighted the MLS Cup win and Club World Cup run, and wished him well. He also leaves with the staff who arrived in January 2025.

Guillermo Hoyos will take charge for upcoming matches, and has overseen Inter Miami’s professional pathway while serving as sporting director after previous coaching and development roles, including at FC Barcelona.

Chief Soccer Officer Alberto Marrero now assumes sporting director duties.
