FLW takes a look at whether Stansfield warrants the wage he's estimated to be on

Jay Stansfield has scored three goals in three appearances across all competitions so far for Birmingham City in 25/26.

Blues broke the third-tier transfer record when they re-signed him from Fulham on a permanent deal which was believed to be over £15m.

Stansfield ended last season with 19 goals in League One, whilst also managing to find the back of the net four times in five EFL Trophy matches.

With the 22-year-old probably hoping he can outscore his first Championship return of 12 two years ago, FLW takes a look at whether he warrants the wage he's estimated to be on via Capology.

How much Jay Stansfield is estimated to be earning at Birmingham City

Stansfield earns £12,500 per-week in the West Midlands, and has six years remaining on his deal, as per Capology estimates.

He was brought permanently to Blues after becoming a fans favourite during his initial loan spell with the club, and his announcement video garnered a massive 1.8m views on X.

Of Stansfield's 19 finishes in League One last season, nine were penalties. In fact, he's only missed one penalty for Birmingham ever - during the 3-2 away defeat to Shrewsbury Town.

This sort of reliability from 12 yards is what Blues fans know they're getting with Stansfield - but most likely expect it from a striker signed for a record fee anyway.

In comparison to the rest of the estimated Capology wages at the club, Stansfield ranks as the sixth highest paid player - not taking into account Krystian Bielik or Bailey Peacock-Farrell who are still listed as Blues players.

Big increase is likely for Stansfield if Birmingham get promoted again

It's obviously expected that if Birmingham achieve promotion to the top-flight this season, then Stansfield and the rest of his teammates would receive a big payrise on their current deals.

As per The Athletic, every member of Leeds United's playing squad received a 50-60% wage increase after their promotion to the Premier League last season.

With this in mind, if Stansfield was to be given a 60% wage increase on his estimated current salary of £12.5k per week, he'd be earning an estimated £20,000 as a newly-promoted Premier League striker.

Even though it's still such a large amount of money for a young footballer to be earning, even £20k per week is minimal compared to the vast majority of top-flight stars.

In truth, Birmingham's wage structure is probably irrelevant given the heavy backing they've received from Tom Wagner, who is expected to invest £3b into the well-planned Sports Quarter.

So whether Stansfield is underpaid or overpaid will ultimately depend on what league Blues find themselves in over the coming seasons, but even then, an estimated £12,500 isn't an eye-watering amount for the second-tier these days.
