Jaydee Canvot has raced from Toulouse prospect to Crystal Palace regular, filling Marc Guehi’s void with poise. By month’s end he hopes to start the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig.
“But the next training session, he was completely fine,” said Toulouse sporting director Viktor Bezhani to The Athletic.
Spotted by Carles Martinez Novell in 2024-25 pre-season, he debuted in late September and started at 17 that January. A switch from midfield to centre-back followed.
After only 22 senior games he joined Palace for €23m plus €3.5m add-ons and a 15 percent sell-on. Aston Villa and RB Leipzig were interested, but Oliver Glasner’s project appealed.
His second Palace outing, against AEK Larnaca in October, brought a risky pass seized by Marcus Rohden for Riad Bajic to score, and he was withdrawn nine minutes later. Expected to be eased in, he instead became a mainstay after Guehi left for Manchester City in January, helped by Maxence Lacroix.
“Keep working, don’t think I do everything bad or everything good,” said Canvot. He added that he stays focused on the future. Glasner said mistakes were feedback and that Canvot has grown.
He averages 3.7 headed clearances per 90 and an 8.0 true tackles rate per 1,000 opposition touches, the highest among under-21 defenders, and ranks highly for carries and final-third passes.
