South Africa international Jayden Adams, 25, has reportedly died shortly after returning home from the 2026 World Cup.
Times Live reports that his body was found unresponsive in a Cape Town hotel, and city police have opened an investigation.
Adams played in all three group matches for Bafana Bafana and helped secure their first ever place in the World Cup last 32. He remained on the bench against Canada after learning of his grandmothers death. At club level he was with Mamelodi Sundowns, winning the CAF Champions League this season.
South Africas sports minister, Gayton McKenzie, posted a condolence message with a video of him embracing Adams.
Speaking for the family, mentor Brendine Johnson said: I do not even have words to describe what we are going through. I had a heartfelt conversation with him on Thursday. He was really positive about coming back after the World Cup. This departure has destroyed everything. Speaking to the Daily Sun.
The South African Football Players Union said it was devastated by the death of the Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, calling it an immeasurable loss to his family, team-mates, clubs, football and the country.
