Jean-Louis Gasset dies aged 72 | OneFootball

Former Olympique de Marseille and Ivory Coast manager Jean-Louis Gasset has died aged 72, Montpellier said on Friday morning.

The son of Montpellier HSC founder Bernard Gasset, he was a popular and respected figure in French football. A former midfielder, he spent his entire playing career at Montpellier and later rose to prominence as Laurent Blanc’s assistant at Bordeaux, with France and at PSG.

PSG dismissed Blanc and Gasset in 2016 and the pair parted ways. Gasset then stepped into management, taking charge of Montpellier, Saint-Etienne, the Ivory Coast national team and Marseille.

Marseille hired him as Gennaro Gattuso’s replacement two years ago. After his contract expired in 2024, OM appointed Roberto de Zerbi.

During 2024-25, he returned to Montpellier but could not prevent La Paillade dropping into the second tier. Most recently, he worked as a pundit for Ligue 1+, Ligue 1’s in-house TV channel.
