Chelsea are nine points behind Manchester City in the WSL

Former Manchester City player Jen Beattie believes Chelsea are still in the WSL title race despite their defeat to Arsenal.

The title appears to be Manchester City’s to lose, after Andree Jeglertz’s side built a nine-point gap at the top of the standings.

Speaking on the BBC Women’s Football Weekly Podcast, Beattie explained why she feels the title race is still on, with nine games to play.

Jen Beattie: Chelsea still in the WSL title race

Beattie believes the WSL title race remains alive ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Manchester City on Sunday.

Manchester City then play Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, meaning that both Chelsea and the Gunners could close the gap down if Jeglertz’s side drops points in both games.

She said: “They still want to win the league. They are still going to chase it, so they will want to go to every game and win.

“That is the history of the club, they are not used to losing games so it’s a strange period for them but it (the WSL title) is still possible.

“They still think anything can happen. Based on City’s performance against London City, they are not invincible.

“Yes, they can go and win games if they play well, but they are still a beatable team.”

City crashed out of the League Cup to Chelsea earlier this month, but have not dropped points in the WSL since losing to the Blues on the opening day of the season.

How Arsenal could still have say in title race

Ellen White, who played for Manchester City and Arsenal, believes the Gunners are in a strong place to “mess up” the title race.

It comes after Chelsea’s Lucy Bronze also said Arsenal were still in the WSL title race.

Arsenal are 10 points behind in the title race, but White said on the Women’s Football Weekly Podcast that they could still have their say.

She said: “It’s all on Chelsea. Manchester City just can’t lose. They could afford to lose, but they don’t want to lose.

“Then I think that Arsenal are in a great place because they can be like “we can just mess everything up”.

“They rise to those amazing occasions like the Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge. I thought they performed really well but it’s all on Chelsea.

“For years now, they haven’t been the ones chasing, and the tables have been turned.”

Arsenal have named their Women’s Champions Cup squad, which starts on Wednesday. Arsenal could win their first trophy of the season- before they return to WSL action against Manchester City on February 8th.
