Jermain Defoe confirms Woking exit, cites circumstances after short National League spell | OneFootball

Jermain Defoe has left Woking by mutual agreement, saying in a social media post that circumstances have made it impossible for him to continue as manager.

The former Sunderland and England striker took charge in March, replacing Neal Ardley, and stepped into management in the National League. He lost only one of six matches and the Cards finished 10th.

His short run featured a 3-0 win at in-form Gateshead in the final away game of the campaign. He had been due to return to the International Stadium in the final week of the upcoming season to face a Heed side led by fellow former Sunderland star Lee Cattermole.

Defoe expressed pride in the work undertaken and felt the club were building something special. He thanked Todd Johnson for the opportunity, praised the supporters and said he was gutted for the players, wishing them success.

He also highlighted the contributions of Paul Bracewell and Karl Halabi, and described his spell as an eye-opening managerial experience that he believes will make him stronger for his next challenge.
