Barcelona president Joan Laporta was sworn in for this fourth term as president on Wednesday, having the club elections back in March. The 63-year-old was in typically buoyant fashion when he spoke to the club’s members at the event, as he made a pleas to those invested in the Catalan side.
As per MD, Laporta asked the Barcelona supporters to stand by him over the next five years of his presidential reign. He is also keen to ensure that the club remains in a stable position for the foreseeable future.
“I said it five years ago: Barça fans, I need you all for this cause – in this Barça we all fit. I want this to reach all Barça fans, those who have voted for us and those who have not. The unity of Barça is very important. We have to close ranks. Institutional stability is very important.
“We need institutional stability to complete this magnum opus of Barça that is the Spotify Camp Nou. We have a team that excites with Flick on the bench and Deco in the offices. We will have the best stadium in the world, a Foundation that is an example, but if we have institutional stability we will achieve it sooner.”
Laporta, who spoke on Julian Alvarez this week, also appeared to take aim at Real Madrid during his speech, referencing their efforts during the ongoing Negreira case (via MD).
“We want to continue being a club owned by the members and that forces us to be imaginative to fight against clubs that are commercial companies. Some are not, but they want to be. We feel strong to continue defending the club. There are some who do not rest, and in the face of attacks on Barça and our dignity, they will always find a strong president and board with a leadership aimed at defending the institution against everything and everyone. It is our commitment.”
