João Afonso, the 19-year-old Santa Clara goalkeeper, will join FC Porto for the 2026/27 season after ending the campaign with senior starts, including at the Dragão.
According to O Jogo, Porto have agreed a deal worth 1.5 million euros plus 500 thousand in add-ons for 80 per cent of his rights, with the remaining 20 per cent available for 2 million. He will sign a five-year contract.
Afonso made two Primeira Liga appearances this season, the final two fixtures for Santa Clara. He kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 home win over Nacional, then impressed in a 1-0 defeat at the Dragão, standing out in Petit’s side.
After his top-flight debut, he wrote on social media that it was one of the most special moments of his life, fulfilling a childhood dream with the club he loves, thanking family, team-mates and coaches, and stressing it was only the first step.
In 2025/26 he also featured in 23 matches for the under-23s and four for the juniors, totalling 29 games with 28 goals conceded. He has trained regularly with the first team since the age of 16.
Afonso is in Oceano Cruz’s Portugal squad for the Toulon Tournament alongside Francisco Silva of Sporting and Diogo Fernandes of FC Porto. He began at São Roque in the Azores before Santa Clara and holds several district titles.
