João Diogo Manteigas flagged security at Estádio da Luz during Benfica’s recent presidential race, and the issue has resurfaced after Civil Protection identified a problem in an inspection. According to Glorioso 1904, the matter was detected on Tuesday, 24 March during checks by specialists assessing major venues.
In January, members approved the Benfica District project at a General Assembly, with 28,338 voting and 59.24% backing the board’s plan. Questions were raised at the time, including by Manteigas, a candidate for the presidency.
He said safety must come first in any stadium expansion, asking whether the current Estádio da Luz is properly licensed by the ANPC and, if not, how Benfica District would resolve that.
In these procedures, clubs must submit documentation, including ANPC confirmation that a venue meets safety rules. When failings are found, and provided they are not highly severe, the authority can set a deadline to correct them.
For now, Benfica’s next home game, against Nacional on 12 April, is not in doubt. The Liga Portugal Betclic fixture, the 29th round, is scheduled for 18:00 against Tiago Margarido’s side.
