Earlier this week, the Julian Alvarez transfer saga involving Barcelona and Atletico Madrid took another turn when the Argentine striker publicly expressed his desire for a summer transfer. Understandably, this has given renewed hope to those within Can Barca, although it has also increased tensions with the Riyadh Air Metropolitano club.

Alvarez is hoping to become the latest player to play for both Barcelona and Atleti, and one of those that did before him was Joao Felix, who was asked by COPE (via Sport) for his thoughts on the matter when addressing the matter following Portugal’s 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday.

“I can’t tell you much, I don’t want to get into that either, but he will have his reasons. Things will happen in there that only he knows. There are things that stay between the player and the club. May he be happy and do the best for him.”

Felix pleased with Al-Nassr transfer decision

Two years ago, Felix was in a similar position in wanting to join Barcelona from Atleti, but in the end, he went to Chelsea, before joining Al-Nassr 12 months later. He spoke on his satisfaction at having made that move to Saudi Arabia, after registering 26 goals and 18 assists in his debut campaign in the Middle East.

“I went there to improve and play in my position. I’ve had a good season, thinking about being good to help Portugal in the World Cup. I’m well and confident.”

Felix never got the chance to join Barcelona permanently two years ago, but whether the same fate befalls Alvarez in 2026 remains to be seen. The Catalans may well be confident of getting their man, but they will not be able to do anything unless Atleti cave on their stance to not consider bids from the offices of the Spotify Camp Nou.
