The Borussia Dortmund man was full of praise for the Blades' creator-in-chief
Borussia Dortmund midfielder and ex-Championship ace Jobe Bellingham has made a big claim involving the qualities of Sheffield United's prized asset, Gustavo Hamer.
When asked to pick a five-a-side team of players he has featured against in the early years of his career, the Birmingham City academy graduate included the Blades' star man alongside the likes of Sergio Ramos, Thiago Silva and Hamer's former Coventry City teammate, Viktor Gyokeres.
Despite having the playmaker's qualities to call upon for a third season at Bramall Lane, it had been the most disastrous of starts for the Steel City side under Ruben Selles, who was dismissed on Sunday afternoon following six defeats in a row across all competitions - the final straw being Friday night's 5-0 away defeat at Ipswich Town in which the midfielder came on as a second-half substitute.
Hamer had previously remained a constant within a new-look side under the Spaniard, with United seeing a major squad overhaul following last season's agonising 2-1 defeat in the Championship play-off final against Bellingham's former club, Sunderland, at Wembley Stadium on May 24th.
The Blades have looked a shadow of their former selves in the opening weeks of the season compared to last term, with Hamer flourishing under Chris Wilder. Those circumstances could unfold once again, however, with the boyhood supporter set to make an immediate return to the club just three months after initially being dismissed by COH Sports.
Supporters will be hoping to see Hamer back to his best and prove why he is so highly rated by the likes of the England youth international after being able to retain his services post-September 1st.
Both Bellingham and Hamer were at the front and centre of many headlines in the Championship last term as the Blades and Black Cats were part of a promotion-chasing quartet alongside Leeds United and Burnley.
After previously setting the second-tier alight at the CBS Arena, Hamer has continued to be a shining light in South Yorkshire across two full seasons since his £15m move under Paul Heckingbottom.
The Dutch-Brazilian was once again a major goalscoring threat off the left flank under the aforementioned Wilder, registering nine goals and seven assists, which led to him being crowned Championship Player of the Season at the EFL Awards in May.
To the surprise of many, United have been able to keep Hamer in S2 despite strong interest from PSV Eindhoven in the latter stages of the window, with Bellingham praising the 28-year-old for his qualities in a video on the Bundesliga's official TikTok account following his own £27m switch from the North East to Signal Iduna Park.
Asked to put a five-a-side team together of the best performers he has played against, the 19-year-old selected Hamer alongside Anthony Patterson, Ramos, Silva and now-Arsenal forward, Gyokeres.
Bellingham's praise of United's creator-in-chief is nothing new to those within the EFL circle, with plenty of opposition supporters and TV pundits always quick to praise Hamer's composure, passing range and combativeness at length.
With many of his high-profile colleagues - such as Vini Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic - departing Bramall Lane in the summer, it seemed a given that Hamer would follow suit, particularly after still being able to register a double-figure tally of goals and assists during the club's dismal relegation campaign two seasons ago.
It wouldn't surprise many, though, if Hamer was to seek a January departure to a club higher up the food chain than the Blades at their current standpoint, especially if the club's fortunes don't take a drastic turn for the better after the winless start to-date.
Regardless of United's shortcomings on the pitch, Hamer has still been able to justify such praise from fellow players, netting from the halfway line against another of Bellingham's old sides - Birmingham - in a 2-1 EFL Cup defeat at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park last month.
Bellingham's highlighting of his quality only underlines the feeling that, whilst Sheffield United remain in the EFL, he's a level above them.
