Johan Manzambi delivered again for Switzerland, setting up the opener in a 2-0 win over Algeria in the last 32. The 20-year-old’s World Cup surge shows no sign of slowing.
He announced himself with a 71st-minute brace in the 4-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. Given a start against Canada, he added a goal and an assist in the 2-1 victory.
Murat Yakin started him again and he made the early difference. A double burst left Aïssa Mandi behind before a cut-back for Breel Embolo to score on 10 minutes.
Under contract at SC Fribourg until 2030, the Genevan has 6 goals in 16 caps. He could energise the summer market and even break the Swiss transfer record set in 2016 when captain Granit Xhaka joined Arsenal from Mönchengladbach for an estimated €45m.
At 20 years and 261 days, he is the youngest with 5 goal involvements at a World Cup finals since 1966 data began, according to Opta. This millennium, only one under-21 had matched it, Thomas Müller for Germany in 2010 with 5 goals and 3 assists.
Thomas Müller told Magenta TV that Bayern Munich should watch him, noting Manzambi can operate as a 6, 8, 10 or even as a striker. Switzerland face Ghana or Colombia in the last 16 on 7 July.
