Johan Manzambi has been ruled out of Switzerland’s World Cup last-16 tie against Colombia on Tuesday, with Ruben Vargas and Djibril Sow doubts.

Blick reports that the 20-year-old attacking midfielder hurt a knee during the final training session, a five-a-side exercise, apparently without contact. The tie kicks off at 22:00.

He underwent an MRI and, while the nature of the injury was not disclosed and the worst-case scenario appears to have been avoided, he will miss the game. The Europa League finalist with Fribourg has been a breakout performer with three goals and two assists at this World Cup.

Michel Aebischer and Luca Jaquez, sidelined for several days, also remain uncertain. Vargas and Sow, like Manzambi, cut short the final session before the match.

Head coach Murat Yakin said it would be a major loss if those players could not take the field. Switzerland have not reached the quarter-finals since 1954, when the tournament was on home soil. Manzambi’s absence is confirmed, and in Switzerland they are crossing their fingers for Vargas and Sow.
