John Toshack, the former Liverpool forward, is 77 and has dementia, his son Cameron has revealed.

"It is a terrible illness," Cameron said. "I speak to him almost every day and, if we talk in the afternoon, he might not remember that we also spoke in the morning," Cameron told the Daily Mail.

The former Wales international won 39 caps and scored 12 goals. Between 1965 and 1984 he played for Cardiff City and, above all, Liverpool, where he hit 96 in 246 games from 1970 to 1978 and won three league titles in 1973, 1976 and 1977.

Injuries forced a gradual end to his playing days. He became player-manager at Swansea in 1978, then switched fully to coaching at Sporting Portugal, departing swiftly.

He later worked extensively in Spain, leading Real Sociedad in 1985-1989, 1991-1994 and 2001-2002, and taking charge of Real Madrid in 1989-1990 and again in 1999. Toshack also coached Besiktas in Türkiye. His trophy-winning career took him to Azerbaijan, Italy, Morocco and Macedonia, and he had a fleeting spell at Saint-Étienne, appointed in early October 2000 and dismissed after 12 matches.
