Bayern kicked off their 2025 Club World Cup campaign with a huge 10-0 win over Auckland City on Sunday. Players and club officials were unanimous in their delight at the result, while also calling for more of the same in the coming games. “When a team sits back and defends well, it’s not a given that you score 10 goals. And that’s why we couldn’t have done much more today,” said head coach Vincent Kompany. Jonathan Tah was also happy after a debut he’ll never forget: “We’re very happy to have started the tournament like this. It was a lot of fun with the way we played, the conviction in almost every situation. We need to keep it up.” fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction from Cincinnati.
Max Eberl (board member for sport): “Games like these first need to be played. I thought the atmosphere in the stadium was good. I felt like more people came in during the game. It was almost 22,000 in the end in a wonderful stadium.”
Vincent Kompany: “Job done. We played really seriously and did what we had to do. Goal difference might end up being important in this group. We said beforehand that it’ll be about attacking perseverance in all likelihood. When a team sits back and defends well, it’s not a given that you score 10 goals. And that’s why we couldn’t have done much more today. The highlight for me was Jamal Musiala’s defensive sprint. And if you’re doing that in this sort of game, then you’ve got a good foundation.”
Thomas Müller: “We played well, played seriously, played with intensity. We didn't take any chances that anything could happen. We kept going after every goal and immediately wanted the next. That’s how we ended up creating such a big score. The stadium was full. The fans enjoyed the goals. It was fun. We want to keep going like this. We won’t always get results like this, but the way we played is what we want to take into the next games.”
Jonathan Tah: “It’s a good way to start the tournament. It’s exactly what we wanted. We could’ve actually done more in a couple of situations to get even more, but on the whole we’re very happy to have started the tournament like this. It was a lot of fun with the way we played, the conviction in almost every situation. We need to keep it up. We’re all ready and were excited to finally get going. You can’t overstate this game. We have to remain clear in our minds and know that the opponents will get stronger. We need to step things up again.”
Aleksandar Pavlović: “We played just like we’d do against any opponent, simply with motivation. It was a new thing to play at midday. It was a bit like youth games in the past. But you need to accept every situation. The fans pushed us well. Now we’ll keep pushing ourselves.”
Ivan Vicelich (interim coach): “I’m proud of the players. They worked hard. It was a tough game. We played against one of the best teams in the world. They’re also a favourite to win the tournament. Our boys gave their all.”
Ryan de Vries (forward): “It was a very challenging game. We knew from the start that it’d be difficult. There’s a reason why they’re champions. The guys really left everything out on the pitch. We tried our best, but they’re just top quality. But still, I’m proud of the guys. They ran for 90 minutes, gave everything, and we can be pleased with ourselves. We’ve watched these guys on TV for years, and now to be on the pitch with players who are big names in their country and for their national teams is really special.”
