Jordan Henderson has left Brentford by mutual consent as he closes in on a move to Chelsea, the club announced on Wednesday. The former Sunderland midfielder joined the Bees last year.

New Blues head coach Xabi Alonso is targeting added experience before the season. He has already failed with a bid to prise Granit Xhaka away from Wearside this summer, and has turned to another player with strong Stadium of Light ties.

In a farewell message, Henderson expressed gratitude for the chance to return to the Premier League and thanked the club, staff, team-mates and supporters. He reflected on a proud campaign together and described Brentford as ambitious, progressive and full of good people.

Alongside Henderson, another ex-Sunderland player, Danny Welbeck, is reportedly closing in on a switch to Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion. The 35-year-old is due to undergo a medical after agreeing personal terms on a two-year contract, with a fee reportedly agreed but undisclosed.

Since joining Brighton in 2020, Welbeck has scored 51 goals and provided 18 assists in 201 appearances across all competitions, including 13 in 37 top-flight outings last term. He is also Albion’s all-time top goalscorer in the Premier League.
