Jordan Henderson has left Brentford after his contract was mutually terminated, clearing a path for a proposed move to Chelsea. He had joined the Bees only last year.
According to Sunderland Echo, the veteran midfielder has been targeted by newly appointed head coach Xabi Alonso to add experience, after an unsuccessful bid for Granit Xhaka this summer.
Henderson thanked Brentford for the chance to return to the Premier League and for the support shown to his family. He said he was proud of last season’s achievements, described the club as ambitious and full of good people, and expressed gratitude to the owners, staff, team-mates and supporters. He added that he leaves with pride and fond memories.
Another former Sunderland player, Danny Welbeck, is reportedly close to joining Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion.
The 35-year-old is said to be set for a medical after agreeing personal terms on a two-year deal, with an undisclosed fee in place.
Since joining Brighton in 2020, Welbeck has scored 51 goals and supplied 18 assists in 201 appearances, including 13 in 37 league games last season. He is Albion’s all-time top Premier League goalscorer.
