According to Sunderland Echo, Jordan Henderson has said his goodbyes to Brentford as he closes in on a move to Chelsea.
Brentford announced on Wednesday that the midfielder’s contract had been terminated by mutual consent, clearing the path to Stamford Bridge. He only joined the Bees last year.
The veteran has emerged as a target for newly appointed Blues boss Xabi Alonso, who wants added experience before the new season. Alonso has already failed with a bid to prise Granit Xhaka away from Wearside this summer, and has turned to a player with strong Stadium of Light ties.
Henderson expressed gratitude for the chance to return to the Premier League and the support shown to his family. He said he was proud of last season’s progress, called Brentford ambitious and full of good people, and described it as a privilege to be part of the club.
He thanked the supporters for their unwavering backing and namechecked owner Matt Benham, Phil Giles, Lee Dykes and head coach Keith Andrews, along with colleagues across the staff and dressing room.
Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck is reportedly closing in on a switch to West London. The 35-year-old Brighton and Hove Albion striker, who spent the 2010/11 season on loan at Sunderland, is said to be set for a medical at Chelsea, having agreed personal terms on a two-year contract. It is also said that a fee has been agreed, although it remains undisclosed.
