Jordan Henderson is set to become the first England player to feature at seven major tournaments this summer after being named in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man World Cup squad.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Brentford midfielder’s call-up has stirred debate since Tuchel, the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain head coach, unveiled his group last month for the tournament in North America. Even so, Henderson is viewed as a trusted presence in the Three Lions set-up and respected by team-mates.
An Academy of Light graduate, he won his first senior cap in a 2-1 defeat to France in November 2010, four months after leaving Sunderland for Liverpool in a reported £15m move. He has since played at six major tournaments, level with Sol Campbell and Wayne Rooney.
His latest selection will push him clear on seven, and he called the opportunity an honour. He said his focus is to be the best version of himself, be ready to help on and off the pitch, and give everything for the team’s success.
Reflecting on what he described as a roller coaster few years, Henderson said he has worked hard and made sacrifices to reach this point, and feels grateful. He added that making the nation proud means the squad must simply be themselves.
