Rotherham United have had an incredibly disappointing season so far in League One, and after 29 games, they sit 23rd in the table, two points off safety.

Matt Hamshaw has been under pressure at the New York Stadium to get the Millers up the league table, but after 12 years out of the fourth tier, there is a strong chance that the South Yorkshire outfit find themselves playing League Two football in 2026/27.

Goals are needed in S60, with only two other sides in the division having scored fewer than Hamshaw's so far. Sam Nombe is the current top scorer in red-and-white, but he has only six league goals to his name this season while no other player has more than three.

This includes veteran striker Jordan Hugill, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign. However, with the 33-year-old on a significant wage, his time at Rotherham is running out.

Rotherham United urged to let misfiring Jordan Hugill go this summer

According to the Rotherham Advertiser, Hugill is the club's highest earner. However, he has failed to perform in 2025/26, and they have reported that the Millers are unlikely to hand him an extension as his current deal comes to an end.

With the former West Ham United forward out injured, Football League World has asked their Rotherham Fan Pundit, Tom Eyre, if this should be his final few months with the club. He said: "I believe the decision has been made regarding Jordan Hugill to let him go at the end of his contract, according to the Rotherham Advertiser. So, I believe that is the final verdict, but also, I think that it's the right verdict.

"Hugill took up massive amounts of the wage budget for the Millers, and as you've seen in January with Sean Raggett being loaned out, we were trying to cut that wage budget. So, I think, for me, it's something that needs to happen, and I think that we can use that money to better use."

Tom continued: "In regard to Hugill as a player, I think he did his job when he was here, but I think you can get a lot better than him, especially for the amount of money that he was on.

"So, I think Rotherham fans will be content to see him go just due to the fact that it hasn't worked out quite how we were all planning it to work out."

Jordan Hugill has proven to be an expensive mistake for Rotherham United

When Hugill arrived at Rotherham in January 2023, it was a move that seemed inspired. He had plenty of experience at Championship level and had played a few games in the Premier League.

He started brightly, scoring five goals in 18 games as the Millers avoided relegation to League One. However, he has added just eight more league goals to his tally since then over the course of three seasons.

Having a prolific striker in a relegation battle is vital, and Hamshaw has not found the best way to utilise Hugill over the course of his time in charge at the New York Stadium.

With the former Preston North End man now out injured, his time with Rotherham is running out and he may not even get the chance to save it.
