Jordan and Algeria meet at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with both sides’ World Cup campaigns on the line.
The West Asian debutants pushed Austria hard before two late goals settled a 3-1 defeat, while Algeria were undone by a Lionel Messi hat-trick in a 3-0 loss to Argentina. Both sides sit on zero points. The loser here faces near-certain elimination with one group game remaining.
Jamal Sellami faces an anxious wait over Abdallah Nasib, who was forced off against Austria and faces a late fitness assessment. His absence would require a reshuffle in the back three. Ali Olwan, who scored Jordan’s historic first-ever World Cup goal against Austria — his 30th international strike — is fully fit and expected to start. Rennes forward Musa Al Taamari, who has 24 international goals, partners Olwan as the only other Jordan player to have reached double figures for the national side.
Vladimir Petkovic has no fresh injury concerns and is expected to make at least one change following the Argentina defeat. Riyad Mahrez was a surprise omission from the starting XI against Argentina, coming on only midway through the second half. He is expected to return to the lineup tonight.
Mohamed Amoura, who has been Algeria’s standout forward in recent months, is also expected to feature prominently. Ibrahim Maza gives Petkovic flexibility to switch between a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1 depending on the flow of the game, with Nabil Bentaleb and Hicham Boudaoui alongside him in deeper midfield roles. Luca Zidane retains his place in goal despite a difficult night against Messi.
Jordan showed genuine fight on their World Cup debut, remaining level with Austria until the 76th minute when an own goal put the Europeans ahead, before an Arnautovic penalty deep in stoppage time sealed a 3-1 defeat. Their six-match winless run heading into this fixture is a concern, and they have conceded at least two goals in each of their last five matches. The defensive frailties are real, but Olwan and Al Taamari offer a genuine counter-attacking threat.
Algeria’s pre-tournament form was genuinely encouraging — they beat the Netherlands 1-0, dismissed Bolivia 4-0, and thrashed Guatemala 7-0 in their last five fixtures before the World Cup. The 3-0 loss to Argentina was sobering, but Petkovic will point to the exceptional quality of the opposition. Against Jordan, Algeria carry significantly more quality and will be expected to convert their dominance into goals.
