Benfica’s interest in Jorge Cuenca has intensified, with the defender seen as a candidate for a project led by Marco Silva, should the coach head to Luz. According to Glorioso 1904, the Spanish centre-back is under consideration.

Cuenca, currently at Fulham, has already worked with Silva and is viewed as a versatile option for the Benfica back line.

A Barcelona academy graduate, he trained with the first team in 2018 under Ernesto Valverde. He emerged from a group that also included Marc Cucurella and Abel Ruiz, formerly of Braga.

Despite strong competition at Barcelona, he made only one senior appearance, in the Copa del Rey. He later joined Villarreal and steadily established himself in Spanish football.

The connection with Silva developed in the Premier League at Fulham, where the Portuguese coach valued his ability to play centre-back and left-back. Silva also publicly praised his versatility and tactical maturity.

With Benfica evaluating defensive options, Cuenca’s name has returned to the table. Any move would depend on the Marco Silva situation, which could prompt fresh activity between England and Luz.
