According to Coluna Do Fla, Flamengo dismissed head coach Filipe Luís on Tuesday after a win over Madureira, and technical director José Boto has since addressed the decision, calling it a matter of professionalism.

Boto said he was hired with a remit to diagnose problems and propose solutions. He added that he offered a solution, which the president accepted, and that there were many reasons he would not disclose, describing difficult calls as part of being professional.

He praised Filipe Luís for his work at the club and said he expects him to enjoy a brilliant career. Boto also highlighted Leonardo Jardim’s experience across different contexts, his titles and more than 20 years on the touchline, and said they believe he can maximise what they regard as the best squad in the Americas.

Flamengo have appointed former Cruzeiro coach Leonardo Jardim, who was presented on Thursday at the Ninho do Urubu training ground and has already overseen two sessions.

With Jardim in charge, attention turns to the Campeonato Carioca final. Flamengo face Fluminense at the Maracanã on Sunday at 18:00 Brasília time. The match will be shown on Rede Globo free-to-air, on Premiere via pay-per-view, and on GETV on YouTube.
