Jose Mourinho has been the one calling all the shots in Real Madrid’s transfer plans this summer, right from the moves for Marc Cucurella and Ibrahima Konate to the departures of Dani Ceballos and Fran Garcia.

The manager has been handed complete freedom by the board to make the signings he deems necessary, and the club have done well to back him up with the moves he requires.

The club’s sudden decision to push for Yan Diomande last night, needless to say, came out of the blue, but many expected Mourinho to have a hand in the development once more. Indeed, that appears to be the case as reported by Fabrizio Romano in a recent update.

Mourinho’s approval secured

As relayed by the Italian journalist, Mourinho has approved Diomande as a target for the first team in the current summer transfer window, and the club’s acceleration on negotiations is a direct result of the same.

The Portuguese coach spoke to the board recently and conveyed to them that he needs more ‘speed’ in his side, particularly the attack, and that has triggered the sudden rush for the Ivory Coast-based talent.

Diomande, after all, is capable of playing on both wings and is a tricky and pacey option for the manager to deploy. All signs point to him playing on Real Madrid’s right flank alongside Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr.

Negotiations proceeding well

While it has indeed been less than 24 hours since Real Madrid’s interest in the winger erupted, Real Madrid and RB Leipzig are already in direct contact over the move.

The German side, after all, have been prepared to lose Diomande for a long time now. PSG were said to have an agreement in place with the player, and Real Madrid’s entry hands them a chance to earn more for their protege.

Los Blancos’ first offer for the player was valued at €90 million with €10 million in add-ons. Leipzig, however, are rumoured to be demanding a €130 million payout as a fixed fee, likely with variables over and above that sum.

The two parties are not too far off, and an agreement can be expected in the coming weeks if matters continue to proceed as swiftly as they are.
