Florentino Pérez has moved unilaterally to bring José Mourinho back to Real Madrid, a near-final decision that has split directors and fans. According to L'Équipe, the 63-year-old has agreed a two-year deal and would have the final say on transfers, with Rodri, willing to join, already proposed. Mourinho currently manages Benfica.
Pérez plans to confirm the return on Sunday or Monday, after the final Liga match and his possible re-election. If no challenger files by Saturday, he is re-elected and free to appoint him. If a rival stands, a 7 June vote follows and defeat could derail the move.
He believes Mourinho can restore competitiveness, order and authority in a fractured dressing room, noting the first spell raised standards before Madrid won six Champions Leagues in 10 years.
Senior figures have urged caution, calling Mourinho outdated after eight years away from the elite and only one trophy, the Europa Conference League with Roma in 2022. They also recall the turmoil he left in 2013. Ex-keeper Paco Buyo says his knowledge helps, but Madrid still need at least five signings.
Fans are equally split. Prominent supporter Tonin El Torero welcomes a respected coach to get the team working and winning again. Others bristle, with socio Antonio, 54, judging him outdated and too combative, while Fernando, 39, sees him as Pérez’s shield if things go wrong and a foil if they succeed.
