Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has responded to Ruben Amorim’s abrupt departure from Old Trafford this week.

The Red Devils ended the former Sporting manager’s turbulent reign this week after a run of just three wins from the last 10 games. Darren Fletcher has been put temporarily in charge as the English giants look for a caretaker manager, with a permanent appointment expected to be made in the summer.

Mourinho is no stranger to life at the Theatre of Dreams, having enjoyed a mixed time with United during his two-and-a-half season stint at the club.

Mourinho’s record at United

Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2016 to take over from Louis van Gaal and started his tenure with a bang. He added Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to his squad, winning the Community Shield, the EFL Cup and the Europa League in his first season.

Fans expected the Special One to be the club’s saviour and the rightful heir to Sir Alex Ferguson, but it was not to be.

While the Portuguese managed to finish second in the league in his second season, things went downhill in his third campaign, ultimately leading to his departure in December. By then, he had registered 84 wins from 144 games with the Red Devils.

After stints with Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma and Fenerbahce, Mourinho is back in Portugal with Benfica, where he has managed 14 wins in his first 22 games in charge.

”Only Ruben can analyse”

Mourinho was recently asked by O Jogo if Amorim’s departure would put pressure on coaches in Portugal and he said: “I don’t understand why, but every coach will answer for themselves. For me, no, I don’t feel that way.”

“I know my career at Manchester United well, I also know the reason why I ended up leaving, but as I always do or try to do, when I leave a club I close the door and then I don’t comment, I don’t analyse what happened externally.”

“One door closes and another opens. That’s what happened when I left. The story stayed there, the numbers stayed there, the three medals came home, and that’s it.”

“The situation with Rúben is something that only Rúben can analyse. I believe he and his staff will do so. Whether he will do it with you and make his views public, I don’t know.”

A recent report relayed by The Peoples Person states that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who replaced Mourinho at Old Trafford in 2018, is the favourite to return as caretaker manager.

Final Thoughts

While Mourinho could not inspire a return to the glory days, he remains United’s most successful manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. Fans will have bittersweet memories of his stint, but will hope that the Red Devils can finally find the fiery Scot’s able successor this year.
