Real Madrid have already announced Jose Mourinho as the first team head-coach for their next project, and the paradoxical nature of the Portuguese manager’s undeniable talents and his recent underwhelming coaching stints is gripping the Merengue fans with a lot of curiosity and suspense about how this appointment would turn out to be.
Most of the secrets of how he would be approaching the team in his second stint as the white club’s manager would be revealed in the days following 13th of July, when the Portuguese trainer is set to begin his preseason training.
Meanwhile, Mourinho is also making some media appearances, in which some of his comments also give indications of how he is going to approach the team. After a recent interview with Vanity Fair, he again appeared with the former footballer Adebayo Akinfenwa, in the latter’s podcast Beast Mode.
As Diario AS has noted, this appearance was mainly aimed at getting some insights from the coach about the Premier League. However, he still made some comments about his new team. For instance, he was quite clear about how he plans to deal with the bigger names at Real Madrid:
“We shouldn’t be talking about Real Madrid, but I want to mention one thing… I’ve read comments saying, ‘José Mourinho is coming in and he’s going to get rid of some of the best players, the ones he supposedly had problems with during the season.’ No! I want those players! I want the best…”
“They say I’m going to get rid of some of the stars, but no… I want them with me.”
The Portuguese manager went on to explain what makes a player great for him:
“Now I have to find a way to build a team and avoid the kinds of problems they supposedly had in previous seasons—at least from what I’ve read, because I don’t know for sure.”
“If you have problems with players who aren’t very good, that’s a big problem. But great players are great players.”
“Sometimes people say, ‘This player has incredible quality, but physically he’s not very good.’ Then he’s not a good player. Or, ‘This player has incredible qualities, but he’s inconsistent; he has ups and downs.’ Then he’s not a great player.”
“A great player is someone who has every quality: he must be technically, physically, and mentally strong. He must know how to play as part of a team. That’s what I’m looking for. Sometimes you have many players like that and it’s paradise; other times you have fewer, and the job becomes a bit more difficult.”
Meanwhile, he also commented on what he considers to be an essential quality in a manager:
“I’ve always believed that one of a coach’s greatest qualities is getting the players to buy into his ideas.”
It remains to be seen how Jose Mourinho would manage a dressing room filled with big names, including the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham, especially after a season in which most of these players were also involved in several dressing room controversies.
This would be one of his most stern tests as the Portuguese manager begins his second stint at Real Madrid, but hopefully, with all his experience and skills, he would be able to guide the Merengue team back to glory from the next season.
