Real Madrid have reached an agreement to sign Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva as a free agent, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Silva will sign a two-year deal with an option to extend for a further year following positive talks with Los Blancos.

He is set to become their third signing this summer, joining Ibrahima Konate, who is also arriving as a free agent and Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were also linked with the Portugal international, but Madrid quickly moved to secure his signing following a request from new manager Jose Mourinho.

Silva signing could be huge for Madrid

Silva arrives with experience and quality that Madrid’s midfield has lacked since the departure of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

His arrival could also signal that Mourinho is ready to adopt a possession-oriented style in his second stint at Madrid.

Silva is known for his ability to dictate the tempo of games, drifting into pockets of space to receive the ball from deep and carry it into advanced positions.

The 31-year-old also offers versatility as he can play as an attacking midfielder and a right winger.

However, he is expected to play in central midfield, potentially partnering Aurelien Tchouameni in Mourinho’s preferred two-man central midfield.

After a trophy-laden career at City, his winning mentality could also be crucial for the Madrid dressing room that has not won a trophy in the last two seasons.

Madrid could still make further signings as they seek to close the gap on Barcelona and be more formidable in Europe.
