Josean Lekue says Nico Williams is fit and available for the rest of the World Cup, with no pubalgia symptoms after turning 24 yesterday.

As reported by as.com, Lekue, Athletic’s head of medical services, said a May hamstring issue in Valencia and a minor right adductor problem with Spain have cleared. He was speaking during his regular review of last season and the current pre-season.

It has been a gruelling year for the winger, but staff stayed in constant contact with Spain’s medical team and his condition is now normal. Lekue will no longer travel with the men’s first team following a departmental restructure, instead he will work with the women’s side.

Recurrences worried the club during a taxing campaign that included the Champions League. Availability decisions were shared by player, coach and medical staff, who opted for a different plan, he paused for seven weeks and returned in far better shape regarding pubalgia.

A final setback before La Liga ended meant he joined Spain’s camp on 4 June without medical clearance. Following agreed rehab work after talks in Lezama, he was technically cleared between 10 and 15 June.

De la Fuente has said Nico will be important in what remains of the tournament, perhaps the semi-final against France and a possible final on Sunday, though for now Baena and Ferran are ahead on his flank. After the tournament in the Americas he is set for a three-week break, moving from total rest to general activation then specific work, and Lekue said that, while they cannot see the future, they consider Nico will be better next season.
