We rounded up all the latest news on the future of Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.
Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill is facing an uncertain future this summer, despite the club winning promotion to the Premier League.
Brownhill joined Burnley from Bristol City for a fee of around £9 million in January 2020, and he has been a crucial player for the club over the past five-and-a-half years.
While Brownhill has always been a consistent performer for the Clarets, the 29-year-old took his form to another level this season as he scored a remarkable 18 goals and provided six assists in 44 appearances, making it by far the best year of his career.
Brownhill finished as the joint-second highest scorer in the Championship along with Norwich City's Borja Sainz, and he was only one goal away from being the division's outright leading marksman, which was a title claimed by Leeds United's Joel Piroe.
With Brownhill acting as their driving force in midfield, Burnley secured an immediate return to the Premier League this season as they finished as runners-up behind champions Leeds, with Scott Parker's side accumulating an incredible total of 100 points along the way.
However, with Brownhill's contract at Turf Moor set to expire this summer, the Clarets are still facing the threat of losing their captain, and we rounded up all the latest news on his future.
Talk about Brownhill's future has gone relatively quiet since the end of the season, but Burnley did provide an update on the midfielder when they published their released and retained list on Tuesday.
The Clarets confirmed that "discussions remain ongoing" with Brownhill over a possible new deal, while the club are also holding talks with fellow out-of-contract duo CJ Egan-Riley and Ashley Barnes.
While there have been reports that Egan-Riley is closing in on a move to French side Strasbourg, Parker had previously indicated that he was confident of keeping hold of both the defender and Brownhill after achieving promotion.
"They're ongoing conversations we've been having now over the last few months," Parker told the Burnley Express.
"These are conversations that we'll keep engaging with. Now we all know and there's real clarity in what next year will bring and where we're going to be, hopefully we can get some conclusions on both of them."
When asked if he was optimistic that the pair would commit their futures to the club, Parker replied: "Yeah, I'm confident.
"I know that both the players we're talking about here have absolutely loved this year and they've been vital cogs of what we've done.
"You obviously never know, but hopefully we can try and get to a point where we'll have a bit more clarity on that."
Burnley may now be back in the Premier League, but it seems the threat of losing Brownhill to a fellow top flight club has not gone away.
Everton have already been linked with one Clarets player this summer in defender Maxime Esteve, but according to Football Insider, Toffees boss David Moyes is also keen on Brownhill, and it remains to be seen if the Merseyside outfit will now step up their interest in the midfielder after it was confirmed that Abdoulaye Doucoure will be leaving the club when his contract expires next month.
West Ham United are also thought to be keeping tabs on Brownhill ahead of the summer, while Wolverhampton Wanderers, who were among the clubs weighing up a late move for the ex-Preston North End man in January, have reportedly reignited their interest.
Brownhill was said to be on the radar of Scottish Premiership duo Celtic and Rangers earlier this year, so Burnley could also face competition from clubs from north of the border as they look to keep hold of their talisman.
Burnley rejected a £3.4 million bid from Trabzonspor for Brownhill last summer, with the midfielder remaining at Turf Moor despite being offered a four-year contract on "significantly improved terms" by the Turkish outfit.
However, according to Gune Bakis, Trabzonspor have not given up hope of landing Brownhill's signature, and his name is believed to have been discussed at the club in recent months as they identify summer transfer targets.
Fellow Turkish side Besiktas are also reportedly interested in Brownhill, and they are said to have contacted his agent to assess his possible salary demands before entering negotiations about signing him on a free transfer this summer.
Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who took over at Besiktas in January, has given his approval to the potential arrival of Brownhill, so the midfielder certainly has no shortage of options to choose from as he weighs up his future.
