Bayern Munich were able to furnish their desired reaction to Champions League elimination in the Bundesliga on Saturday. A 0-4 away win over Heidenheim enabled the Bavarians to take an important step towards their 34th league title after team leader Joshua Kimmich scored the decisive goal in the 56th minute.
Kimmich’s second league goal of the campaign effectively put the game to bed. The 30-year-old remained calm and collected slotting home to score FCB’s fourth on the afternoon. Understandably enough, one of German football’s fiercest competitors was all smiles in the mixed zone afterwards.
“The way we approached this game was, for me personally, very impressive,” Kimmich said. “We care about the Bundesliga as much as the Champions League. I think one could sense from the outset that this game was important to us. One shouldn’t talk down the victory today.”
When it came to the team’s overall posture and demeanor, Kimmich certainly led the way from the start. Kimmich’s leadership role on Saturday nevertheless came with an interesting twist.
With starting goalkeeper and regular skipper Manuel Neuer still out and current de-facto alternate captain Thomas Müller not playing from the start, it was Kimmich’s turn to don the armband.
Kimmich did so in the first half, but emerged without it for the second 45. The band wasn’t on his bicep when he scored the goal.
“I need to talk to our kit man,” Kimmich explained. “It doesn’t really fit me. It’s grating as it’s a bit too big. I’d like to request that we order a new armband – at least for me. I think it fits Manu [Neuer], but it’s a bit difficult for me.“
