Liverpool’s Midfield Evolution Under Slot

Liverpool’s start to the new campaign has been close to perfect. Four wins from four in the Premier League against Bournemouth, Newcastle United, Arsenal and Burnley have given Arne Slot’s side momentum, and the opening Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid only added to the sense that something is building. Ryan Gravenberch took centre stage in that 3-2 win in Madrid, producing a performance that drew widespread praise, not least from David Lynch, who shared his views with Dave Davis for Anfield Index.

Gravenberch Rising to New Levels

What stands out in Lynch’s assessment is how quickly Gravenberch has gone from being a promising talent to a figure regarded as irreplaceable. “Gravenberch is another one who is working himself into that undroppable level alongside the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.” It is a remarkable statement considering the calibre of company he is being compared with, but it reflects both his development and the faith Slot has shown.

The Dutch midfielder’s ability to control games and add dynamism has not gone unnoticed. “There’s nobody else in the squad that can do what he does in the squad in terms of playing the number six role to such a high level.” Liverpool supporters have long sought balance in midfield, and Gravenberch appears to be providing just that.

Qualities That Define a Modern Midfielder

Lynch went further, praising the range in Gravenberch’s game. “I genuinely think that he is one of the best in Europe in that position. I really do think he has all of the qualities and in terms of an all-rounder who offers you progression with his dribbling, passes the ball well and wins tackles too.” Such attributes are rare, and when allied to consistency they make a player invaluable.

There was also admiration for the flair Gravenberch brings. “Some of the turns yesterday, even though he does it all of the time, still takes your breathe away.” Watching him glide past opponents with ease has become one of the team’s trademarks under Slot, and it reinforces why he has become such a fan favourite.

Importance of Keeping Him Fit

The reliance Liverpool now have on Gravenberch was also made clear. “He’s crucial. If he got an injury then you’d be really worried because there’s nobody that can replicate that he does.” This observation is telling, not only because it underlines his influence but because it points to the lack of like-for-like alternatives in the squad.

Lynch was emphatic in his conclusion. “It’s not just his defensive qualities, but he completely outstrips every other number six on the ball and he is a much better footballer.” He added, “I genuinely don’t think there’s a player in the world that I would swap him for and he’s still very young and will get even better.” That is high praise, and with Liverpool already on a winning run, his presence could prove pivotal in shaping another title challenge.
