Everton’s summer planning already feels more purposeful than hopeful. David Moyes wants full-backs who can carry the team up the pitch, not simply survive pressure, and that explains why Neco Williams has emerged as a serious target.
According to Sami Mokbel of BBC Sport, Everton, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Aston Villa have all made ‘discreet enquiries’ for the Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams. That phrase matters. It suggests curiosity rather than commitment, but also intent rather than idle gossip.
Williams, now 25, has enjoyed a strong season at Forest, producing two goals and four assists in 51 appearances across all competitions. For a full-back, those numbers point to end product, durability and trust.
Vitaliy Mykolenko has been reliable for Everton. He defends honestly, understands danger and rarely hides. Yet Everton’s next step requires more invention from deep areas.

Williams brings that. He’s comfortable at left-back & right-back, which makes him especially attractive to Moyes. In modern Premier League football, versatility is not a luxury. It is squad insurance.
Forest, understandably, want to keep him. His contract runs until 2029, and talks over an extension have already opened. That gives Forest control, and it means Everton would need to be convincing, financially and competitively.
Everton are expected to trigger Mykolenko’s one-year extension clause, avoiding the risk of losing him for nothing. That is sensible housekeeping.
However, it does not guarantee his long-term future. If Williams arrives, Everton may have to make a difficult call. Mykolenko has given the club stability, but Moyes may now want greater attacking thrust.
The complication is obvious. Manchester United, Newcastle and Aston Villa can all offer strong sporting arguments. Everton must sell a vision, a starting role, a new era under The Friedkin Group and the chance to become central to Moyes’ rebuild.
For supporters, that alone is significant. Everton are no longer simply patching holes. They are trying to shape an identity.
From an Everton fan’s perspective, this is exactly the sort of link that stirs cautious excitement. Neco Williams feels like a Moyes player in the best sense, energetic, competitive, adaptable and still young enough to improve.
The Liverpool academy connection will make some supporters pause, but that should not dominate the debate. Everton need better players. Williams has proven himself at Forest, played under pressure and shown he can contribute in the final third. That matters.
Mykolenko deserves respect. He has been solid during some bleak years and has rarely let the club down. Yet Everton have too often lacked attacking quality from full-back areas. If Moyes wants his wide players supported properly, then this is an obvious position to upgrade.
The concern is price. Forest do not need to sell, and rival interest could push the fee beyond Everton’s comfort zone.
Still, the bigger message is encouraging. The Friedkin Group appear ready to back Moyes, and Everton are looking at players who could improve the starting XI immediately. That feels like progress.
