Still, sentiment will not carry him far. Gorst was clear about what comes next, writing: “This pre-season period is vitally important for the boyhood Liverpool fan if he feels a change in the regime might force a rethink regarding his game-time.

“Iraola said last week that all of his players are ‘like new signings’, so it will be up to Elliott to make the most of whatever opportunities come his way in the coming weeks.”

Liverpool Need Squad Depth

For Liverpool, the logic is simple. Iraola’s football is intense, aggressive and physically demanding. Across four competitions, he will need players who can handle rhythm changes, tactical variation and heavy minutes.

Elliott may not walk straight into the strongest XI, but that should not be the only measure of his value. His technical ability, left foot, creativity between the lines and emotional connection to Liverpool give him tools worth reassessing.

Redemption Must Be Earned

There is a romantic version of this story where Elliott returns, impresses Iraola immediately and forces his way back into the Liverpool picture. Football rarely works that neatly.
